A proposed $15 million class-action settlement could allow eligible users to claim thousands of dollars following two significant security breaches. The first breach occurred in December 2021 when a former Cash App employee allegedly downloaded sensitive reports containing personal data on over 8 million users. This breach exposed vital information such as full names, brokerage account numbers, and, in some instances, details about investment portfolios. Following this incident, another data breach transpired in 2023, where unauthorized access to Cash App accounts was reported. According to the consolidated class-action complaint, this was facilitated through the use of recycled phone numbers. While Cash App and Block have denied any wrongdoing, asserting that the settlement does not imply liability, users are encouraged to file claims. If you had a Cash App account between August 23, 2018, and August 20, 2024, you may be eligible for compensation. The settlement covers up to $2,500 for out-of-pocket expenses related to the breaches and compensates users for lost time at $25 per hour for up to three hours. Additionally, users who have suffered monetary losses that have not yet been reimbursed can also file claims.
