Spotify has reversed its decision to limit lyrics access for free users, once again allowing them to view lyrics for any song they listen to on the platform. Back in May, the company tested a change that restricted free users to seeing lyrics for just three songs per month, a move that faced significant backlash from the user community.
Starting now, Spotify is removing this cap, giving free users unrestricted access to song lyrics across the entire platform. This decision comes after the company received criticism for what many saw as an attempt to push users toward its paid subscription tiers, which start at $11 per month.
“At Spotify, we’re always testing and iterating. This means availability of our features can vary across tiers and between markets and devices,” a Spotify spokesperson told Engadget. “Over the coming weeks, we’ll be expanding Lyrics availability for Spotify Free users so more people can enjoy viewing more lyrics, globally.”
The move aligns with Spotify CEO Daniel Ek’s recent comments about improving the experience for free users. During the company’s latest earnings call, Ek mentioned that enhancing the free product pipeline was a priority, with further improvements planned for the coming months. Reinstating full lyrics access seems to be one of the first steps in this broader strategy.
Spotify’s decision is likely to be welcomed by its global user base, many of whom rely on the free version of the service for their music streaming needs.
