Google has announced plans to assemble its Pixel series smartphones in India. Rick Osterloh, Google’s senior vice president of devices and services, revealed that the new Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro devices would be produced in India, hitting the market as early as next year.
At the company’s annual event in India, Osterloh emphasized Google’s commitment to India, stating, “We are working with international and domestic partners to produce Pixel smartphones locally. This marks our first step in expanding manufacturing here to meet the growing local demand for Pixel devices, underscoring Google’s dedication to India.”
This initiative follows Google’s recent collaboration with HP on manufacturing Chromebook laptops within India, reflecting a broader industry trend. Samsung established the world’s largest smartphone factory in India five years ago, while Apple’s partner, Foxconn, is investing $600 million in infrastructure to manufacture iPhones and semiconductor chips locally.
New Delhi’s proactive financial incentives to attract global corporations align with a wider industry strategy known as “China + 1,” aimed at diversifying manufacturing bases beyond China. Google’s decision not only signifies a significant leap in its manufacturing capabilities but also aligns with India’s rising prominence in the global tech production landscape.
